My Day On A Plate
When people ask me ‘What The Heck Do I Eat?’ they’re asking for a meal plan where they don’t think and just eat – preferably something delicious.
If you have read my previous blog post however you know that there is a lot of legwork that needs to happen before that point.
But people are really fascinated with what I eat – with my fellow podcasters, interviewers and patients constantly asking for ‘My Day On A Plate’. So here it is…
My Day On A Plate
Breakfast:
After a quick high intensity workout in the morning, usually at home I sit down with my family to my favourite breakfast of all:
Forage Bircher Muesli that has been soaked overnight in Coconut Water, 5:am Vanilla Yoghurt and seasonal fresh fruit
I tend not to measure my food as I usually batch prepare my muesli at the start of the week and scoop as much as I feel I need into a breakfast bowl each morning. If I had to guess though I’d say that the combination of pre-mixed Muesli, Water, Yoghurt and Fruit is about 1 Heaped Cup.
Morning tea:
No less than 90 minutes after my breakfast – to avoid disrupting the digestion of my breakfast – I indulge myself in a morning ‘Cup Of Joe’
Latté (with Regular Milk!?)
I have personally never found that dairy gives me too much trouble, especially when consumed in such small doses and so yes, I confess I enjoy a Full-Fat latté, no nut mylk or soy requests here!
Lunch:
I usually eat lunch out everyday and sit down with a friend or inspiring person that I want to take that time with. This is a welcome break from a long morning at practice or on calls with the boys and helps me recharge for the afternoon ahead.
No matter where I am I will always look for a salad of sorts or some kind of eggs with avocado; a moderate protein meal with plenty of veggies and healthy fats, avoiding Gluten or any highly processed grains or sugars where I can.
Another favourite of mine is to order the chef’s special as I usually suspect that this will be the dish best served with care and positive energy…not to get too woo woo.
In terms of portion I eat until I am satisfied, meaning that sometimes I may not finish all of my meal.
Afternoon:
Around 3 or 4 o’clock I will usually look for…another hit of caffeine. “Two coffees?” I hear you shriek!
I have found that over the years that my tolerance to these things has proven quite strong, and I believe that if you can enjoy something as much as I enjoy coffee without any adverse reactions, the reward far outweighs the potential cost.
As you may have noticed, I don’t consume so much of an ‘afternoon snack’. This is because I ensure that my main meals are a balanced combination of protein, complex carbohydrate and healthy fats according to my Palm Method. By eating main meals and portions according to my unique body type, I ensure that I am well satiated, my mind is clear and I am able to function at my best for my patients.
Dinner:
Always best enjoyed with family and friends is my favourite meal of the day: dinner. I love to cook and find cooking for my family to be the greatest act of service; feeding them nourishing, wholefoods to thrive themselves. The process of cooking is also a form of meditation for me who struggles with sitting still and humming Om. And while my experiments in the kitchen can create both great and not-so-great results they are always made with love.
My dinner always follows this very vague structure: Between 4 – 7 types of veggies, including starchy vegetables such as pumpkin, sweet potato, white potato etc., some sort of animal – or plant-based protein and a good lugging of high quality oil.
Some of my favourite dishes include:
- Anything that I can throw into the slow cooker and serve when we are all ready to sit down;
- A beautiful Asian inspired Cabbage Salad with BBQ’ed Chicken and a homemade sauce;
- Grilled Lamb served with fresh Mediterranean salad, full-fat cheeses and olive oil
So, what do you think? Is this what you expected ‘My Day On A Plate’ to look like?
